Context
This project portfolio is a report of my extended project for my first-year UAL Diploma in creative Media Film and TV pathway.
The project is a short film about two characters; old pen pales, who get in touch again and slowly fall in love with each other through letters.
The context page of the project portfolio presents the background of my project, starting with Who am I?, what I have learned/gained from the course, and who/what inspired me for my project. Followed by what my project is about and why its important. Concluding with my project proposal.

Project
My Mind-map for three possible FMP ideas:
Idea 1
Idea 2
Idea 3
Idea 1 Viability:
I believe that this idea is most viable, this is because I have access to the locations without disrupting anyone and although the actors will not be available, I will instead use my family/friends as an alternative as they live close by which leaves no room for let downs. This idea will also allow me to experiment with my story-telling capabilities, having already made a short film giving me an idea on what improvements I can make.
Idea 2 Viability:
I believe that this idea is somewhat viable, I do have access to research and family members/friends, however getting everyone to the locations at different times could prove to be difficult with everyone's schedules. However, this idea will enable me to experiment with camera transitions and challenge my script writing skills.
Idea 3 Viability:
I believe that this idea is viable relying hugely on the actor’s availability, this is because it’s revolved around the script and their capability of portraying the characters/scene I have written. This Idea does not allow much room for creativity in other areas of film and tv therefor not very creative, however it will be capable of making.
Pie chart of 5 students showing
how much they like each idea:
1- they don't like the idea
4- they love the idea
Number of people voting this number.
The over-all comments for idea 1 were that it was very creative and showed a clear display of forward thinking, not an over complicated storyline in that it’s easy to follow along. I also gained feedback on improvements, one of the students explained I should use the colours pink and red to my advantage making them boulder as the two characters fall in love, another student also said that music will play a big part in building emotions. The idea was over all seen as a light-hearted, cute story of love.
Peer Feedback:
The feedback from idea 2 has brought me to the conclusion that I will not go forward with this idea, it was described as imaginative and a way to get kids to enjoy history with the comedy aspect. However, each student explained it would be harder to execute due to my lack in experience of documentary's but is an idea to hold onto for the future.
The comments from idea 3 gave me the confidence in that the script would be easy to understand as they have all already seen the original ‘my story’ script I'm improving from in this idea, I was advised to include costume design and props to amp up the scene to give it the set up of a short film but keep it simple with the shot-types.
Tutor Feedback:
When talking with one of my tutors I was given feedback on each idea, my first idea was told to have a lot of creativity and freedom within what I can do, I was advised my second idea (the mockumentary) would be a challenge as we have not yet dived into documenting on its own; but the style of Wes-Anderson is an idea I should keep in mind with my final project. My third idea does have structure to it however my creativity would be expressed in other areas compared to my idea 1 and possibly a lack of freedom with what I can do.
My final idea?
From looking over all my feedback and thinking ahead on what I could do with each idea I have decided to combine both ideas 1 and 2 in some way, I will be using the Wes Anderson style I was going for in idea 2 for my idea 1; to do so I will ensure to be focusing on the mise-en-scene and colours that are included within the camera's frame and keep the shot-types simple with not too much happening at once. As I want to keep my idea 1 light-hearted, I will therefor be using my storyline from my idea 1.
Tutor feedback:
The use of colour in your FP film can add a very interesting layer to the story and its subject matter. Combined with your desired stylistic approach of a similar aesthetic to Wes Anderson, it can become part of the plot , direct the story, pre empty the protagonists feelings and worries and act as a parallel curve to identity. Where and how you are planning to use colour must in this case become your language. What colours combinations? Stereotypical or not? Can you create a palette that will subconsciously tell your story while keep your audience focused on the acting? As a romantic comedy you are limited with muted, happy, positive colours, but you also need the darker tones for your plot point, so how can you differentiate your film using a palette range that is unique to you? And in creating your shot list and your compositions, what percentage is colour and what percentage is symmetry, Dutch angles and mise-en-scene?
