Introduction
On this page you will expect to see details on guest speakers that have come into our class to discuss their work/the industry and the work we are currently studying, along with any work experience I have taken part in.
Richard Belfield
This week we had a guest speaker Richard Belfield come in and discuss with us how to create a documentary relating both to his work in the industry and the current topic/project we are studying. Within the discussion he spoke on how to structure a documentary, that you must grab the attention of the audience immediately to keep them hooked. Over-all a documentary has no rules, you can either leave your audience learning something new or touched with emotions how you do this is up to you. I also learnt a lot about the world of documentary, some of his films have taken 10 years some a matter of weeks it's all dependant on the story and publishers, he's worked with FBI agents, ex undercover cops, lots of very interesting people trying to tell their story. From this talk I have begun to think more in depth as to the type of people I want to interview and how I would go about doing so, Richard said that its very important to build trust between you and the interviewee by being polite and conversation before diving straight into filming, make them feel comfortable then you will get the best answers.
When talking one to one with Richard I was able to learn more about the work he has done, filming long days and building relationships with people in the end creating a story. I was also able to discuss my idea's with him, he told me about a cat fair in Brighton, and to ensure I do not judge the people I interview.
